RE: Herbs
In my city we haven't got a botanica, but there is a shop that sells herbs for health remedies that carries a lot of herbs that can be used magically.
Even the grocery store is a good source for many useful herb and spice ingredients. Some of these include: Cinnamon: for money and love Allspice: for money, especially gained through business or work Cardamon: for love and passion Rosemary: for purification, protection Oregano: to keep away obnoxious or meddlesome people Ginger: for protection and love Thyme: for money Basil: for peace, purification, money, and love (this is a great multipurpose herb!) RE: Herbs
A good place to look for some herbs are Mexican stores too. I found a lot of my herbs there...although Winco has a bunch that you can buy in bulk. The Mystic Corner on line has a fair list of herbs and are not too bad at shipping prices... I find some places by typing in the herb/root in question and seeing what comes up, but word to the wise...check out the shipping and handling charges. By the way Talia do you know what Berry of the Fish .... an ancient name .... do you know which one it is by chance? Also I'm a little confused about Valerian root, I've seen it in love potions and in black art spells to remove people....is it one that does work both sides of the fence?

RE: Herbs
"Berry of the Fish" I might be able to identify if I had more context (what kind of spell or recipe that was mentioned in -- a love spell, death spell; and is it Greek, hoodoo, Chinese or what?)
Different traditions use herbs differently -- a Wiccan spell will often be different from hoodoo for example. Valerian, as I was taught, is for contacting the dead, and it appears in certain love spells where ghosts are invoked to pester the target into love; and more commonly it's for harmful workings. RE: Herbs
Basil...I've been trying to grow it, keep fresh leaves in glasses around and of course dried. I've boiled up some dry and I've used it as a floor wash and put it in a sprayer to spray the air as well.
Berry of the Fish: Sprinkle in enemies yard to make them move away or stay away from you. and what use is bearberries? The leaf is used as a smoke or tea...but is there anything about the berries? Have a good evening ladies...and Talia is there anywhere else your book is available? |

I've boiled up some dry and I've used it as a floor wash and put it in a sprayer to spray the air as well. I'd probably use cubeb or black peppercorns in place of "berry of the fish" but, I'd guess it's probably this plant: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anamirta_cocculus Since it's used to stun fish and make them easier to catch, I can imagine it would be used to stun unpleasant people and make them easier to deal with. As far as I understand bearberry, the berries or leaves can be used magically, BUT the berries as I understand are rather foul tasting and since the plant is often made into a tea, the leaves alone are generally used. From the Modern Herbal: ---Medicinal Action and Uses---In consequence of the powerful astringency of theleaves, Uva-Ursi has a place not only in all the old herbals, but also in the modern Pharmacopoeias. There are records that it was used in the thirteenth century by the Welsh 'Physicians of Myddfai.' It was described by Clusius in 1601, and recommended for medicinal use in 1763 by Gerhard of Berlin and others. It had a place in the London Pharmacopoeia for the first time in 1788, though was probably in use long before. It is official in nearly all Pharmacopceias, some of which use the name Arbutus. The usual form of administration is in the form of an infusion, which has a soothing as well as an astringent effect and marked diuretic action. Of great value in diseases of the bladder and kidneys, strengthening and imparting tone to the urinary passages. The diuretic action is due to the glucoside Arbutin, which is largely absorbed unchanged and is excreted by the kidneys. During its excretion, Arbutin exercises an antiseptic effect on the urinary mucous membrane: Bearberry leaves are, therefore, used in inflammatory diseases of the urinary tract, urethritis, cystisis, etc. Besides the simple infusion (1 OZ. of the leaves to 1 pint of boiling water), the combination of 1/2 oz. each of Uva-Ursi, Poplar Bark and Marshmallow root, infused in 1 pint of water for 20 minutes is used with advantage. The tannin in the leaves is so abundant that they have been used for tanning leather in Sweden and Russia. An ash-coloured dye is said to be obtained from the plant in Scandinavian countries. The berries are only of use as food for grouse. Cattle, however, avoid the plant. RE: Herbs
In hoodoo, valerian can be used for crossings and uncrossings...so the answer to your question is yes, it does work on both sides of the fence.

In hoodoo, bear berries function as a spiritual aid, help with psychic and porphetic dreams, and enhance the power of healing talismans. It is also combined with red willow bark and other herbs to make kinnikinnik.
